• Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and AAMFT Clinical Supervisor

BACKGROUND
Born in India and raised in the US since the age of three,

I have also lived and worked in the Dominican Republic and Japan.

After immigrating with my family from India, I spent my formative adolescent and teen years living and studying in Maryland, California and the Dominican Republic. As a young adult, I also worked and studied in Japan. These experiences helped to stretch my understanding of the ways different cultures live. I am part of a multi-cultural and multi-lingual family. I believe this gives me a unique perspective on how individuals, couples and families deal with the stressors associated with immigration and acculturation, multi-ethnic relationships, intergenerational conflicts, life transitions and other difficulties.

Prior to making a mid-career change to the field of marriage & family therapy in 2010 – I worked as an international marketing and public relations executive for almost 20 years in the high tech industry. This experience taught me a lot about working with clients from very diverse cultural backgrounds and professional identities. It also gave me an opportunity to witness firsthand the stress and other negative effects of ‘corporate America’ and in conforming to social norms and pressures that don’t fit our own ideas of self.

Before becoming a licensed marriage & family therapist (LMFT) and going into private practice, I trained as marriage & family therapist under the guidance and collaboration of a wonderfully supportive community of therapists at San Diego State University’s Center for Community Counseling & Engagement (CCCE), where I also served as its Clinic Administrator for three years. In 2014, I joined NISD Counseling, a non-profit counseling center in Hillcrest, as an MFT Associate and Business Administrator. In 2016, I was promoted to Co-Director and Board Member at NISD, providing leadership, clinical supervision and overseeing operations. I remain in this role today out of passion and commitment to the non-profit’s mission of providing affordable therapy to underserved clients, and training culturally-responsible therapists.

In 2017, I opened my own private practice providing tele-health counseling services throughout the state of California. Over the past five years, I have slowly and thoughtfully expanded my staff with five compassionate and relationally-skilled MFT Associate therapists.

In addition to being an LMFT and AAMFT-Approved supervisor, I am an adjunct  faculty member at San Diego State University teaching in the Department of Counseling & School Psychology’s  undergraduate and graduate programs. I care deeply about mentoring new therapists and teaching students to cultivate a multi-cultural worldview that honors the diversity and rights of all people.

‘I recognize that many of the hardships that clients face are the result of systemic racism, injustice and inequity.’
